Samsung Galaxy Player – The iPod competitor

Samsung doesn’t want to limit the brand of Galaxy to the smartphones, just like the Apple rivals didn’t. Apple had copied the entire iPhone into their iPod touch, just by removing the SIM and calling option. Everything else was the same in the interface and the design too. Samsung now follows the trend by copying the entire Samsung Galaxy S, into their soon-to-be-launched Galaxy player which would be just an entertainment device with no calling options.

One of the best smartphones in the market Samsung Galaxy S, already promises enough hype for the coming galaxy player which is based on the Android operating system. And this is not too far, as the device would be showcased at the CES 2011 to be held next week. But the question is, with the iPod touch, the Zune, the Sony mp3 players around, would the Galaxy player stand strong?

Microsoft has shipped 1.5 million Windows Phone 7

Microsoft said today that it has shipped over 1.5 million of its new Windows Phone 7 handsets to retailers since the smartphone went on sale in late October.
However, the software behemoth hasn't yet said how many sales to end users it has made.
By comparison, it's main rival Apple sold 1.7 million iPhone 4s in June in the first three days the phone was available, and has sold over 31 million iPhones so far in 2010 alone.
For its part, Google says it is currently activating 300,000 Android phones each day of the week.
Nevertheless, analysts are still impressed by what Microsoft has been able to do so far, considering that it was at a near standstill in the mobile segment less than a few months ago.

Android Take 9% of Smartphone Market with over 178K Phones sold in India in Q3

A recent report from IDC’s India Quarterly Mobile Handsets Tracker, 3Q 2010, Android captured 9 percent share in Indian smartphone market. Remember that it was only 2.9% in 3Q 2009. Also in the third quarter of 2010, the total number of Android smartphone sales was approximately 178,000 units and it was only 63,000 units in the second quarter. Now India is a fast growing smartphone market and specially Android is in top of them and its the main reason why every company launching their Android smartphone here even at low price.

In three days time, 2010 will take its exit from the stage. The year saw an unprecedented growth in the field of technology; especially in smartphones segment. More than ever before, there have been discussions about them everywhere.

Smartphones: Around the world in 365 days
Smartphones have many takers including the aristocratically rich guys, hardcore tech geeks, busy business executives and professionals among others. Google Chrome OS Reviews

It still may be too early to truly pass judgement, but for those who got their hands on Google's Chrome OS here are their reviews.
In late November of 2009, Google unveiled more details of its new Chrome operating system (OS). Google’s Chrome OS will be a whole new type of operating system—the company is calling it a lightweight operating system that will take place within a Chrome-based browser. The company says it envisioned Chrome as a Web-only experience, so you can kiss your file system and software applicationsgoodbye. One of the fixes for this new operating system that has caused a bit of chattering is that it’s supposed to be extremely fast. Google is gearing the Chrome OS for speed: speedy Web access, speedy Web browsing, and just over all speed in performance.

Bored? Want a Light Show? Put a CD in the Microwave!

I love smashing, blowing up, destroying and burning things just to see what they look and feel like afterwards. I know, it’s something teenagers do, but I can’t help it. It’s just hard to resist, and the fact that we aren’t supposed to do it makes it even more fun.

Have you ever put a CD in the microwave? Today I was messing around on Interestings.net, and I found these pictures of a microwaved CD. At first when I saw these, I thought, “No way!” I immediately jumped over to YouTube to see if I could get verification.

iFan: Charges Your iPhone Using Pure Wind Power!

There have been many products that rechargeyour iPhone and mobile devices once they are out of power, and by the looks of things, the constant flood is not about to stop anytime soon. Of course some are nothing but ideas and concept designs, and some are even spoofs that are created to give us a daily smile and laugh. However, there are products out there that actually do have a purpose and are very real even though they come across as a virtual joke. We’ve long been harnessing the wind for power, and lately we’ve even started harnessing the waves, but the wind seems to be of constant interest to scientists all over the globe.

For Tjeerd Veenhoven it was a no brainer to choose wind a power as a source when he designed the iFan. It’s a portable device that you can just slip out of your bag and insert your iPhone into. The iFan is created out of rubber so it can withstand heavy jolts, and after your batteries have gone scuba diving, you can even use it to rechargethem back to life. However, don’t expect it to be in a blink of an eye.

More on the new Google Nexus S smartphone

Google's new Nexus S smartphone will go on sale in Best Buy stores next week for $529 for the unlocked version or for $199 with a two-year contract from T-Mobile USA.

There are many reasons for Google to produce a "pure Google experience" phone to help increase Android's momentum. Mobile app developers need to have early access to a new operating system to make sure their apps will work well on the new phone.

Google's Android operating system allows wireless carriers and handset makers to dictate the pace at which their customers receive Android updates, meaning some app developers on one carrier might not be able to see new releases before customers on another carrier start running the software, and that is something that Google wants to change.

There's also even more reasons for building a phone like the Nexus S. When Google tried to launch its previous Nexus One smartphone almost a year ago, it came with plans to free consumers from two-year contracts, end exclusive deals between wireless carriers and handset makers for new phones, and a few more things in between.

BlackBerry users consume more mobile data than iPhone users

This just came in... According to StatCounter, BlackBerry users utilized more mobile data than iPhone users for November. If this is a new trend, could it mean a small turnaround for Research In Motion? Well it's too early to tell at this point, but it could if the trend goes on for an extended period of time.

On average, RIM's BlackBerry operating system took about 34.3 percent of all mobile data traffic in the U.S. last month. Apple's iOS was right behind with a 33 percent share. Google meanwhile continues its rapid pace of growth with the Android OS gaining from 8.2 percent a year ago to about 23.8 percent in November.

During that same period, Apple's overall market share for the iPhone has dropped from almost 52 percent to just 33 percent.

“These numbers suggest that mobile app developers shouldn't be developing solely for the iPhone to the exclusion of BlackBerry and Android,” StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen said. And as for Microsoft's chances, he added “This data clearly demonstrates that there is a battle already going on in the smartphone market for the consumer and business Internet user. You can never underestimate Microsoft but it sure looks to have its work cut out for itself."

LG Electronics unveils the first dual-core smartphone

Earlier this week, LG Electronics has unveiled the very first dual-core smartphone, its new LG Optimus 2X.
The new device features a Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, which LG says will result in much faster Internet browsing and mobile apps rendering. The new Optimus 2X also allows users full multitasking privileges with less screen lag.
The smartphone also comes running Android 2.2 and features a four-inch WVGA touchscreen, 8 GB internal memory (expandable up to 32 GB), eight-megapixel rear camera, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, 1080 pixel video playback and recording, Wi-Fi and full BlueTooth functionality.
Jong-Seok Park, CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications says "Dual-core technology is the next step forward in the wireless and mobile segment so this is no small achievement to be the first to offer a smartphone utilizing this technology."
Park added that the Optimus 2X is proof of LG's commitment to the high-end smartphone market, and that there will be more of this to come in 2011.
LG Electronics says the Optimus 2X will be available in South Korea in January with countries in Europe and Asia to follow soon. It is hoped that the new phone will be available in the U.S. by late-February, early-March 2011.

Google's Android OS actually helping iPhone sales

A close analysis of the eight largest mobile vendors' average selling prices for their smartphones was just posted by market intelligence firm Asymco, and the study reveals something very interesting that is currently happening. Something that even Apple didn't expect.
In fact, Steve Jobs is probably laughing all the way to the bank right now.
Apple's average iPhone selling prices have actually gone up since Google's Android open source (read: free) operating system was introduced, and although there has been some price erosion among the other top vendors (the orange line in the chart below), it is still surprisingly small. Almost negligible in fact.
